SAN DIEGO - A 7-year-old boy lost a part of his leg Monday after being struck by a vehicle in the Colina Del Sol neighborhood.

The crash occurred just before 4:45 p.m. in the 4300 block of Altadena Avenue, San Diego police said. The boy was struck and dragged by an orange Honda Element after he ran into traffic, according to police.

Witness Melchor Portugal told 10News, "I saw the kid running from his house across the street. I saw him running toward me and the car hit him and dragged him. I heard a boom and he ran over him; over his leg and his ankle was hanging. His bone was broken."

The driver remained at the scene and was not cited.

The boy was taken to Rady Children's Hospital, and 10News learned doctors had to amputate his left leg below the knee.
