Border Patrol agents find 15 pounds of cocaine in SUV's gas tank

SAN DIEGO - A 34-year-old woman was arrested at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 5 in San Clemente Tuesday morning, after 15 pounds of cocaine were reportedly found in the gas tank of her SUV.

A K-9 team searching the 2001 Mazda Tribute alerted agents to six bundles of cocaine that were concealed in the gas tank, according to a news release from U.S. Border Patrol. The gas tank was accessible from a panel under the backseat.  

The cocaine weighed 14.55 pounds and had a street value of more than $189,000.

The driver, an American citizen, was taken into DEA custody. She was not identified. The drugs were also seized by the DEA.
