SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Ysidro Border Crossing will shut down and Interstate 5 southbound traffic will be rerouted Saturday because of construction that will last until Monday.

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is modernizing and expanding the San Ysidro Port of Entry.  The closure is needed to remove the existing vehicle inspection canopy over I-5 south.  Additional roadwork and the installation of underground utilities will take place.

All southbound traffic on I-5 and I-805 will be closed south of SR-905 for 57 hours, starting Saturday, Sept. 23 at 3 a.m. The easternmost exit lanes to I-5 north will remain open during this time.

The closure will end Monday, Sept. 25 at noon.

All drivers heading south to Mexico are advised to use the Otay Mesa border crossing, via SR-905 east to SR-125 south.

It's estimated that about 50,000 vehicles and 25,000 pedestrians cross southbound through the San Ysidro Port of Entry daily, according to the U.S. General Services Administration. That number also applies to northbound traffic.
