Bonsall golf course could be returned to natural state despite protests from nearby residents

San Luis Rey Downs course is up for sale

BONSALL, Calif. - Golf fans in the North County may be dealt a blow next year.

The owners of the San Luis Rey Downs Golf Course in Bonsall could sell the property to a mitigation company, which in turn would sell the property as carbon credits.

A sale would mean the decades-old golf course would be returned to its natural state.

"They're taking away a big part of the community of Bonsall," said Bon Cote, who has lived along the course's 12th fairway for 16 years.

The course's general manager declined to speak to 10News, but the course's owner, Colt Vessels, told the Fallbrook Village News the fate of the course had not been decided yet.

"We just don't like the way it was done," said Cote.

He told 10News they only learned about the potential course sale by word-of-mouth. Now, residents are worried the course sale would mean their homes would lose some of their luster.

"I understand that property values are going to go down roughly 20 percent," said Cote, who attended a meeting Monday night to learn more about the potential sale.
