SAN DIEGO - The body of a South Bay man missing since last week was found Tuesday next to the San Diego River in Mission Valley.

Chula Vista police contacted their San Diego counterparts about 7:30 a.m. to request assistance in following up on a lead in the missing person case, SDPD Lt. Jorge Duran said.

About two hours later, San Diego police found the deceased man -- identified as Robert Chesney Jr. -- in a shrubbery-covered area near a riverbed homeless camp south of Fashion Valley mall.

Homicide detectives investigated the scene and found no signs that the man had been slain, according to Duran.

"That may change once the autopsy is done," the lieutenant said.

Chesney was last seen on Feb. 2 in an area near UC San Diego Medical Center.

Chula Vista police had begun looking for him around the river on Monday, suspending the search when darkness fell, Duran said.

The cause of Chesney's death is under investigation.
