Body found during Carlsbad fire ID'd

CARLSBAD - Police have identified a man whose body was found during the Poinsettia Fire in Carlsbad, one of several that raged as part of last month’s San Diego Complex.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office reported this week that 57-year-old Adolfo Velasco was found May 15 just outside the Maldonado Grower’s Farm. Authorities suspect his death was associated with the fire, but have not confirmed it. The cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Firefighters found Velasco’s body in an area of Ambrosia Lane and Calliandra Road, a location known to have been used as an encampment by transients.

The 400-acre Poinsettia Fire destroyed an 18-unit apartment complex, four single-family homes and two commercial buildings, and damaged at least one other structure and several vehicles, authorities said. It caused more than $22.5 million in damage.
