JAMUL, Calif. -

Crews who extinguished a car fire alongside a rural East County road early Thursday found scorched human remains in the trunk of the destroyed vehicle.

The blaze in the 16200 block of Skyline Truck Trail in Jamul was reported about 4:15 a.m., sheriff's Capt. Duncan Fraser said.

Homicide detectives were summoned to investigate the discovery of the badly burned corpse, the captain told reporters. Bomb-arson investigators also were called in, he said.

The victim was male, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office, which will seek to determine who he was and how he died through an autopsy scheduled Friday.
