Birdrock residents fed up with violence at La Jolla motel

SAN DIEGO - Birdrock residents contacted 10News on Wednesday, fed up after two recent shootings and other violence outside an area motel.

Police crime tape littered the ground outside the La Jolla Biltmore Motel at 5385 La Jolla Blvd. after someone shot a man outside his room Sunday night.

"We heard two gunshots, then heard a guy out here screaming and sure enough, he was laying down here," said neighbor Alan Brown.

Brown and his neighbors say their street is normally quiet and family-friendly, but in the last several months they have seen an uptick in violence at the motel. In August, Sky 10 was over the scene of another shooting at the Biltmore.

Police cars are something residents say they see too often at the motel.

"A lot of fighting over there, people in and out, there's a bunch of transients," said neighbor Linda Galley.

Brown said, "I've seen people get frisked and arrested here in front of this business. I've seen people being questioned."

10News checked to see how many crimes police have responded to in the area in the last six months. On crimemapping.com, we typed in the motel's address and found eight incidents reported in the 5300 block of La Jolla Boulevard. Two of the crimes listed included both shootings at the motel.

A manager on the property would not go on camera. She told 10News she had no comment about Sunday's shooting, but she did say she screens every customer by making sure they have proper identification.

Neighbors say that is not enough.

"They need to clean up the motel or close it down, do something with it," Galley said.
