SAN DIEGO - A tractor-trailer was reduced to a melted smoldering hulk Wednesday night after it went up in flames on Interstate 805 in University City.
The big rig driver told 10News that he was driving northbound on I-805 near Nobel Drive at 7:15 p.m. when the engine began to stall, so he pulled over.
He said the engine then erupted into flames and he called the fire department.
By the time firefighters arrived, the truck was completely engulfed in flames.
It took about half an hour for fire crews to knock down the blaze.
The California Highway Patrol said traffic on the freeway was shut down for about 5 minutes due to the danger.
Officers said the truck's trailer did not catch fire, but it's unknown if the contents were damaged.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
