Local business owners and experts gathered at a convention Wednesday to discuss the growing problem of bed bugs.
"As a scientist, they're fascinating, but yeah, they're gross," said entomologist Gail Getty.
Getty and a handful of other beg bug experts spoke to San Diego business owners at a Clark Pest Control-sponsored bed bug convention at the Hilton Mission Bay.
"It's a definitely a growing problem and one that's only going to get worse," said Getty.
According to a recent study, 1 in 15 homes in New York are affected by bed bugs.
San Diego has seen its own share of infestations, including a Lakeside apartment complex in January and dorms at San Diego State University.
According to San Diego County pest control officials, more than 90 percent of calls come from apartments or condos. Experts say bed bugs, which feed on blood, can be found just about anywhere humans inhabit, including couches, baseboards, and mattresses.
Experts say the only way to fight bed bugs is quickly and with professional pest control.
