Base officials: Strange lights seen in the sky near Camp Pendleton are flares from training

SAN DIEGO - Strange lights that were seen in the sky near Camp Pendleton on Monday evening are flares from nighttime training, base officials told 10News.

Callers in Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Vista began reporting the lights starting at about 9:30 p.m.

A news release from Camp Pendleton issued last Friday said artillery units are conducting a live-fire training exercise starting Sunday and continuing through early Wednesday. The training involves around-the-clock firing, the release stated.
