SAN DIEGO - Izaiah Wallis, who San Diegans have come to know as Baby Izaiah, underwent emergency surgery at Rady Children's Hospital Wednesday evening, according to a group representing his family.
A Passion 4 K.I.D.S. spokesperson said Izaiah was rushed to the hospital to undergo surgery for an intestinal blockage. As of Thursday afternoon, Izaiah, who is now 4 years old, remains in intensive care surrounded by his family.
In 2010, Izaiah's grandfather was taking him out for a walk in a stroller in Oceanside when a teenage drunken driver crashed into them.
The teen who struck Izaiah and his grandfather was sentenced to 480 days in a youth offender program.
Izaiah, almost two years old at the time of the crash, was left paralyzed from the chest down. He uses a feeding tube and has a ventilator with a colostomy and tracheotomy tube in place.
Passion 4 K.I.D.S. said: "The family's situation is compounded by the fact that their handicapped van broke completely down and is unable to be fixed so Izaiah's emergency was dramatically increased when they had to wait for someone with a truck to be able to rush him to the hospital with all his equipment, since it doesn't fit in a regular car."
