Baby girl found dead in East Village apartment

SAN DIEGO - An infant was found dead of unknown causes in an East Village apartment Tuesday morning.
The landlord of the Baltic Inn, an affordable-housing building, in the 500 block of 6th Avenue made an emergency call about 5:40 a.m. to report that a roughly 2-month-old girl had been found unresponsive and not breathing, according to San Diego Police Department spokesman Humberto Hernandez. Police say the employee called because a woman reported that her daughter was not breathing and had blood on her face.
The child, whose name was not immediately released, died at the scene, despite lifesaving efforts by officers and paramedics, Hernandez said.
Child abuse detectives were called in to investigate, which is routine in such cases, he said.
The county Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of the baby's death.
