Aztecs get lackluster homecoming after Sweet 16 ouster

SAN DIEGO - Only a handful of fans were on hand to greet the San Diego State men’s basketball team Friday morning after they were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.

The Aztecs fell 70-64 to No. 1 seed Arizona in a hard fought game in Anaheim Thursday night. It marked only the second time in school history that SDSU had reached the Sweet 16. It was by all accounts a successful season.

What seemed more disappointing than the tough loss was the reception upon their return to San Diego, where only three fans waited to meet the team, as the players stepped off the bus to the sound of silence.

It was in stark contrast to the reception they received following last Sunday’s big win over North Dakota State in the round of 32. One of the fans that met the team bus blamed the university for not getting the message out.

"We need to get a better system in place, so that everybody knows, the team is coming back, meet them here," he said.

The players did not seem that concerned, however. Those that spoke to 10News said they were grateful for the fan support throughout the season.
