The report by Deputy Medical Examiner Craig Nelson confirmed the 43-year-old Seau died of a gunshot wound to the chest from a .357-caliber revolver.

"No alcohol, common drugs of abuse or other medications were detected," the report said.

The report did note that small amounts of Zolpidem, a drug used to treat insomnia, and naproxen, an anti-inflammatory used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling and stiffness from arthritis, were detected.

Those test results were "consistent with therapeutic use," according to the Medical Examiner.

The report also noted Seau's brain tissue was sent to the National Institutes of Health at his family's request.

"We don't have any comment beyond the report that was released today based on the family's wishes," said Sarah Gordon of the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Seau, a USC alumnus who played in the NFL from 1990-2009 and with the Chargers for the first 13 seasons of his professional career, took his life May 2 at his two-story beach home in Oceanside. No suicide note was left at the scene, investigators said.

Oceanside police said the gun used in the shooting was not registered to Seau.
