Authorities search for murder suspect mistakenly released from LA County jail due to clerical error

Clerk failed to enter a hold order for suspect

LOS ANGELES - Authorities are searching for a murder suspect who was mistakenly released from the Los Angeles County jail system because of a clerical error.

The Los Angeles Times says 33-year-old Johnny Mata was freed from the Inmate Reception Center in downtown Los Angeles on April 4 after a clerk failed to enter a hold order for him in a computer.

He's charged with a 2010 gang-related shooting that killed a man in Baldwin Park.

Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore says Mata is the first high-risk inmate to be mistakenly released this year, although three others were freed by clerical errors. Those three were quickly recaptured.
