Authorities search for man who they say sneaked into woman's Cardiff home, watched her sleep

The search is on for a man detectives say sneaked into a woman's home and watched her sleep in her bed.

The incident occurred at about 3 a.m. Monday at the Cardiff by the Sea Apartments off Carol View Road.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department released a composite sketch to the media Friday night, describing the suspect as a 35-year-old Hispanic man who is about 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds.

The victim told deputies she woke up to the sound of footsteps. When she opened her eyes, she saw the man standing by her bed. He then fled the residence in an unknown direction.

Neighbors at the complex were surprised to hear the news.

"It makes me nervous," said Tambar Zukowski, who lives at the apartment with her two young daughters. "[That woman] could have been sexually abused or dead."

Another resident, Brianna Nowlan, added, "That's terrifying… The front gate is broken so that's the only thing that's going through my mind, why is no one guarding the gate if there's something like that?"

10News called the property managers of the complex. No one returned our calls as of Friday night.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect or has any information about the incident is asked to call Detective Shawn Silva at the Encinitas Sheriff's Station at (760) 966-3500 or Crime Stoppers' anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477. You can remain anonymous and be eligible for up to $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
