LA MESA, Calif. - A man was taken to the hospital after briefly barricading himself inside a motel in La Mesa, prompting nearby road closures and the evacuation of motel guests.

La Mesa police said they received reports at around 11:30 a.m. of an incident between a male and female at the Motel 6 in the 7600 block of Alvarado Road, just west of state Route 125 and south of Interstate 8.

Police said a man was reportedly destroying a second-floor room. When officers responded to the disturbance, the man ran back into the room and refused to come out. At one point, the man broke a window and cut himself.

After several minutes, the man came out of the room with his arms raised and making rude gestures towards police. Officers quickly detained him, and he was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

The woman was OK, and motel guests who were evacuated during the response were allowed to return.

Alvarado Road was closed between Fletcher Parkway and Bob Stall Chevrolet auto dealership on Alvarado Road during the brief standoff.
