Authorities identify Timothy Evan Nodal as hiker who died in Campo

SAN DIEGO - A 19-year-old man who died during a hiking trip in the Campo area was identified Friday by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

On Thursday, Julian resident Timothy Evan Nodal was hiking with a friend at the Pacific Crest Trail near Lake Morena when he told his friend he did not feel well, according to the medical examiner. Nodal told his friend to continue without him.

Nodal's stepfather made an emergency call shortly before 1:30 p.m. after receiving a text message from his son and learning that he was not well, the medical examiner said. Nodal also injured his leg while trying to continue the hike.

When public safety personnel met up with Nodal off Lake Morena Drive in the Campo area, he was alert and talking, Capt. Kendal Bortisser of Cal Fire said.

His condition soon worsened, and he passed out and stopped breathing, Bortisser said. Medics tried in vain to revive him before declaring dead at the scene, according to Bortisser.
