SAN DIEGO - Authorities Friday identified the 42-year-old San Diego man whose body was found north of the Tourmaline Surfing Park in Pacific Beach about eight hours after he disappeared while surfing in the area.
Brandon Beaver was spotted with his surfboard far from the beach on Wednesday evening but disappeared from bystanders' view, so they alerted lifeguards, who began searching along with personnel from other agencies, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
His unattended surfboard with a wetsuit tied around it was found about 300 yards out, according to lifeguards and the Coast Guard. The search was later called off.
Someone walking along Tourmaline Street found Beaver's body in the surf about 3:35 a.m. Thursday, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.
San Diego lifeguard Lt. John Everhart said it was thought he had drowned, and wounds on the body were consistent with a shark attack, but authorities' initial investigation indicated the attack occurred after death.
The Medical Examiner's Office scheduled an autopsy for 9:30 a.m. Friday.
