Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher to join Qualcomm after term concludes

Fletcher's term ends Dec. 2

SAN DIEGO - State Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher announced Thursday he will be joining San Diego-based Qualcomm once his term ends in December.

"I believe in the power of innovation to improve people's lives," Fletcher said in a press release. "Qualcomm brings innovation to people across the globe. They are a great community partner and provide good paying jobs for San Diegans. I am proud to join their team and look forward to helping advance these endeavors."

On his Facebook page, Fletcher added, "I'm really excited about the next phase of my life … I'm going to be senior director of corporate development, and I'm going to be working on some business ventures that they have."

Fletcher said he will also be working with Qualcomm philanthropic causes and will still have a visible role in the community. Functions Fletcher said he won't have are government relations and lobbying.

Fletcher's term as Assemblyman for District 75 officially ends Dec. 2.

Fletcher gave up his assembly seat for his unsuccessful bid to become San Diego's next mayor. During the campaign, he made national headlines when he left the GOP and became an Independent. The former Marine impressed San Diego Mayor-elect Bob Filner enough to get a serious job offer from him as Deputy Mayor for Economic Development.

"We had talked about it and I offered him a job," said Filner. "He decided for his own growth and his family that he would take another offer."

Many believed Fletcher would run for higher office.

"I mean, you never know what the future holds, but I don't have any immediate plans," said Fletcher.

Political analyst Carl Luna said Fletcher's break from politics could be a risk to any future political plans.

"In the modern age, brands, until they are fully established can come and go, and it's not clearly apparent his is a long-lasting brand," Luna said.

Still, Luna said he doesn't expect Fletcher to disappear from the political lexicon anytime soon.

Qualcomm Chairman and CEO Dr. Paul Jacobs said, "Nathan Fletcher has tremendous talent, a great mind for business and shares our vision about the potential for technology and innovation. We are thrilled to have Nathan join us. His energy, passion and drive will be a great addition at Qualcomm."
