SANTEE, Calif. - A man fell to his death off a highway bridge in Santee early Tuesday, causing major traffic delays on state Route 52 and surrounding roadways.
The apparent suicide on the westbound side of the East County highway at Mast Boulevard occurred around 8 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
A 911 caller reported to the CHP that the man parked a pickup on the Mast Boulevard bridge, got out and then jumped backwards off the overpass. Another caller said he was on his knees with his hands stretched out before the fatal fall.
The county medical examiner's office was asked to collect the body, the CHP reported.
Traffic backups were reported on nearby highways 125 and 67.
