The shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 300 block of N. Mollison Avenue was reported about 5:50 p.m. Thursday, said El Cajon police Lt. J.D. Arvan.
Witnesses told investigators that 10-15 people were in the parking lot when the shooter exited the passenger side of a light-color fullsize sport utility vehicle and confronted the group, Arvan said.
The shooter then fired several rounds at the group, which included some documented gang members, Arvan said.
When officers arrived, the shooter and the group had fled. The wounded man was located at an area hospital a short time later, according to Arvan, who said the man was shot in the legs. The wounds were not life-threatening, the lieutenant said.
The shooter was described as a Hispanic man in his late 30s, about 5 feet 8 and 180 pounds, with dark curly hair.
Anyone with information about the shooting was urged to call El Cajon police at (619) 579-3311.
