Nutra Nuggets pet food, produced by Diamond Pet Foods and distributed throughout California, was recalled by the company Tuesday after tests found trace amounts of melamine in the food, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced.

The recall affects Nutra Nuggets 40-pound Lamb Meal and Rice Formula with production codes NLR0404A2SL and NLR0404B2SL with the expiration date of Oct. 9, 2008.

The recalled product was manufactured at Diamond Pet Foods' Lathrop facility and distributed at stores in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.

No animal deaths have been reported, but pet owners should immediately stop using the recalled food and return the product to their local retailers for a full refund.

Pet owners should also contact their veterinarians if their pets become ill. All reports of possible food toxicity should be reported to Los Angeles County Veterinary Public Health at http://lapublichealth.org/vet/disintro.htm.
