SAN DIEGO - A man was hospitalized Sunday night after a skydiving accident in the South Bay.
The accident occurred just after 8:00 p.m. on the 13000 block of Otay Lakes Road, according to authorities.
During a jump with Skydive San Diego, two men collided mid-air during a free fall, causing one of them to lose consciousness.
When firefighters arrived, the man had no memory of the collision and was complaining of back and leg pain. He was airlifted by Mercy Air to Scripps Mercy Hospital.
According to Buzz with Skydive San Diego, the emergency parachute opened automatically after a computer chip that reads altitude and speed of fall deployed it.
According to Chief Jim Garcia with Chula Vista fire, the emergency parachute likely saved the man's life.
The second man involved in the collision was not at the scene when firefighters arrived and his condition is unknown.
