A man, reportedly drunk and wearing all black, was run over while lying on Interstate 5 in the South Bay, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A CHP officer was just behind the motorist who struck the man in a northbound lane near the Palomar Street offramp about 10:20 Monday night, CHP Officer Alicia Contreras said.

The man, whose name was withheld, was airlifted to UCSD Medical Center, she said. No hospital condition was available, but Contreras described the injuries as severe.

Officers were responding to a report of a man lying in the road with the car's emergency lights on when a motorist in front of them struck the man, she said.

The man was stuck under the car for a time before rescuers got him out, she said.
