POWAY, Calif. -- The city of Poway decided Tuesday to turn on its red-light traffic cameras, 10News reported.
SOUND OFF
Poway's camera boxes have been sitting idle for several months.
Similar cameras are currently under investigation in the city of San Diego.
Poway officials claim that the system is different from San Diego's.
The cameras will be run by a company that collects a monthly fee for their operation, instead of a percentage of the ticket revenue, according to 10News.
One of the reasons the judge in the San Diego case ruled that the red-light cameras were unreliable stemmed from the fact that the cameras were run by a for-profit corporation, instead of a government unity.
Poway mayor Mickey Cafagna said that his city's cameras were never meant to make money.
"Statistics show that these cameras at traffic signals save lives, and that's our whole intention," Cafagna said.
