SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders announced Monday his endorsement of "Jessica's Law," which would toughen the state's laws governing sexual offenders. The measure, which will appear as Proposition 83 on the November ballot, is named after 9-year-old Jessica Marie Lunsford, who was taken from her Florida home in February 2005 and molested and killed by a sex offender. The measure would increase the minimum sentences for sexually violent predators and require registered felony sex offenders to wear a Global Positioning System device that would track their movements for life.
"It is vital that this proposition become law on November 7th," Sanders said. "Not only will it keep a tighter reign on felony sex offenders and thus help better protect the public, but it will also give law enforcement and the courts the additional tools needed to do that."Also joining Sanders at Princess Del Cerro Park to announce support for the proposed law was District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, Sheriff Bill Kolender and Councilmen Jim Madaffer, Ben Hueso and Kevin Faulconer.Sanders presented Jessica's father, Mark Lunsford with a proclamation from the city in support of Proposition 83."I have been a single parent for 15 years," Lunsford told a local TV station. "I got Jessie when she was a year old. She had been with me all my life. I didn't raise my kids so somebody else could come along and take that away from me."
