Friends In Shock Over Dance Hall Owner's Arrest

Dance Hall Owner Booked On Suspicion Of Murder

The 70-year-old owner of a San Diego dance hall was booked Sunday on suspicion of murder following the shooting death of a 39-year-old man who was attending a party at the facility, 10News reported.

The suspect was identified as San Diego resident Virgil Gordon, San Diego police Lt. Dave Johnson said.

Gordon rented out his hall in the 4100 block of Alpha Street on Saturday night to a family celebrating a 15-year-old girl's birthday, Johnson said.

The party continued into Sunday morning, when an argument began between Gordon and some guests.

“All indications we know are a verbal argument began and escalated when the suspect produced a firearm. Shots were fired, striking the victim,” said Johnson.

Police said Gordon pulled out a handgun at about 1:50 a.m., pointed it a number of the guests and began firing, striking the 39-year old man. No one else was injured.

Police arrived minutes later and took Gordon into custody without incident.

The handgun was recovered. The 39-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends of the millionaire businessman are stunned.

“Very shocking he killed somebody,” said a friend of Gordon’s.

Another Gordon friend said, “I don't know what could have set him off.”

The victim's brother-in-law wouldn't comment on the argument or why it escalated and many community leaders and people close to Gordon are shocked. They are calling this incident completely out of character.

“For him, I'd say yes, but as a businessman, not surprised, lots of property, tenants, obviously have problems from time to time if you're a landlord. Maybe he felt the necessity of having a weapon,” said friend George Stevens.

“Very strong man, outspoken, wanted best for community and a smart businessman,” said friend Herman Collins.

“He's one of those who believed in hard work to build up the community,” said Rev. George Walker Smith.

An arraignment is expected Wednesday when the question of bail will be addressed as well.
