Local Dancer Hopes To Bounce Back From Horrific Accident
A piece of concrete fell off a truck and into her windshield, then struck her in the face. There are several surgeries still planned for Arwen Renner, who had dreams of dancing on Broadway. Those dreams may still come true.
Renner is tough and she has spirit. But she came close to losing everything on a Saturday afternoon on Route 78 in San Marcos.Renner was hit in the face with a chunk of concrete the size of a fat paperback book.“She won’t let me cry. She squeezes my hand hard and says ‘Don’t you cry for me,’” said Randy Renner, Arwen’s father. She and boyfriend Adam Daniels were driving her mother’s Volvo in San Marcos.“We were driving home from work and a piece of concrete fell off a work truck and came through the windshield. I grabbed the wheel, pulled over to the side, got rear-ended and rolled down the embankment,” said Daniels. The couple was whisked to Palomar Medical Center in just minutes, and Renner was in surgery for 7 hours. The rock struck her eye, slicing through the middle of her eye. Most of the bones in her face were broken. The damage to the car was extensive and many believe the couple was very lucky to survive. The concrete is still in the back seat of the car.Renner just arrived home from New York. Broadway was not happening and she decided to chase her dream on the West Coast as a dancer, teacher or choreographer. Her dad thinks about the smiling face he sees in old photographs.“She never gave me grief as a child. I never had to punish her. Never,” said Mr. Renner. She won a World Jazz competition in Costa Rica two years ago.Her family believes she'll be back on stage.“I think she will. It’s going to take a while, but she's going to do it,” said Renner.Arwen Renner will have surgery for her eye this weekend and several reconstructive operations following that.Doctors are optimistic, and hopeful she will be going home in a week or so.She has no insurance, but some financial assistance may be available. As for the driver of the truck, the California Highway Patrol has no leads, but hope someone will come forward with some information.
