SAN DIEGO -- Papa John's delivered a record 13,500 pizzas to a San Diego shipyard to commemorate the completion of the U.S. Navy's newest dry cargo ammunition ship, 10News reported. The simultaneous deliveries to NASSCO will now be submitted to Guinness World Records for authentication as the "world's largest pizza order." according to Kentucky-based Papa John's. The current Guinness World Record for world's largest pizza order was set in August 1998, with a request placed by the North Carolina-based VF Corp. for 13,386 pizzas at 180 locations across the country. More than 6,000 NASSCO employees, subcontractors and Navy sailors were at the shipyard to polish off the six-inch pizzas as a lunchtime reward for completing the 689-foot-long USNS Lewis and Clark, which took 2 1/2 years to finish. To meet the delivery deadline, Papa John's tapped the resources of 15 of its San Diego-area restaurants beginning at 6 a.m., with more than 100 employees tasked with making about 56 pizzas per minute.
