SAN DIEGO -- A former Clairemont High School history teacher was arrested at her North Park home Wednesday on suspicion of having sex with a student two years ago.San Diego police took Danielle Marie Walls, 27, into custody about 8:30 a.m. and booked her into county jail on suspicion of child molestation, San Diego Police Department Capt. Guy Swanger said.“Here were multiple incidents of unlawful sex with a minor. I wouldn’t label it a relationship,” said Swanger.
Walls allegedly had sex with the 16-year-old boy between April and December 2004. His family reported the alleged crimes -- which reportedly occurred off campus -- about two months ago, according to investigators. It is not unusual for sex-crime victims to delay revealing the offenses for months or years, Swanger told reporters during a Wednesday afternoon briefing outside downtown SDPD headquarters.School officials said the accusations came out during a recent disciplinary hearing involving the alleged victim. The suspect has left the San Diego Unified School District and now works in real estate, the captain said. The alleged victim currently attends classes at another campus.Meanwhile, on campus, the accusations sparked a range of reactions. One student said, “If somebody had a party, she (Walls) would be there.”Some of Walls’ former students said she didn’t always act like a teacher.“She was all over the guys. She didn’t talk to the girls, just the guys,” said senior Mayra Valero. This type of case involving a female teacher and male student has attracted national headlines in the past and, once again, it has sparked a debate on the severity of the crime.“Everybody says ‘Miss Walls is fine’” said one male student.Another student said, “Yeah, he’s underage but he’s old enough to know wrong and right.”“They know what they wanted to do and they did it,” said another student. One male student said he believes the victim was lucky.Other students said whether the teacher is male or female, it is wrong.“They’re teacher and student. The teacher has power either way,” said student Luigi Assenti. For Clairemont High, it’s the second scandal in months. In March, former football coach Michael Smerdon was charged with possession and distribution of child pornography.School district officials Wednesday re-emphasized their zero-tolerance policy.“Our schools work very hard to earn public trust. That behavior doesn’t belong in public education,” said Richard Van Der Laan of San Diego City Schools.Swanger said he didn't believe teacher-student child molestation cases are on the rise, but may appear to be because they have been reported with increased frequency in recent years."I think it sends a very good message for students who know about these incidents and aren't calling -- they should," he said.
