UPDATED: 2:03 p.m. PDT August 16, 2001

A magnitude-4.4 earthquake was recorded near San Clemente Island Thursday.

Seismographs monitored at the U.S. Geological Survey and Caltech Seismic Net recorded the temblor at 11:04 a.m.

There have been no reports of injury or damage.

The epicenter was said to be about seven miles southeast of the island, which is 55 nautical miles south of Long Beach, and 68 nautical miles west of San Diego.

"Nobody called us. We didn't feel it," San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Gloria Rundle said.

An Oceanside police official reported likewise.

"As far as us, we didn't even feel it," the OPD's Gary Schults said.

San Diego's beach safety crews also were unaware of the temblor.

"That's news to us," lifeguard Steve Malcolm said.

San Clemente, the southernmost of the eight Channel Islands, is about 21 nautical miles long, and is 4 1/2 nautical miles across at its widest point.

Since 1934, the island has been owned and operated by various naval commands. More than a dozen range and operational areas are clustered within a 60-mile radius of the island.
