SAN DIEGO -- A San Diego police officer was killed Friday when his motorcycle collided with a car and burst into flames in Lincoln Park, authorities said. Officer David Moya, 29, of Campo, had been with the department for five years.
He was headed to his parents' house when his civilian motorcycle struck a vehicle on Imperial Avenue at Interstate 805 at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday, San Diego police said. Moya had just left his patrol shift at the department's Southeastern Division. He planned on spending the night at his parents' home because he was due in court in San Diego this morning, said Gary Hassen of the SDPD. "David was an outstanding officer who will be greatly missed by this department and the citizens of San Diego," SDPD Chief William Lansdowne said in a statement. A preliminary investigation revealed that Moya was traveling west on Imperial Avenue when his motorcycle struck a Chrysler sedan turning left onto Imperial Avenue from southbound I-805, according to police. The motorcycle burst into flames and Moya became pinned beneath the car, San Diego police Sgt. Rich Nemetz said. The 30-year-old woman driving the Chrysler was uninjured, Hassen said. The SDPD Traffic Division was investigating the crash. Moya, who had been involved in two fatal officer-involved shootings last year, was described by colleagues as an excellent officer with a good sense of humor. Investigations concluded that both shootings were justified. Moya is survived by his wife and 5-year-old child. Funeral services are pending.
