10News Test Drives The Electric Car
Tiny Car Has Smooth Ride
SAN DIEGO -- The environmentally conscious can now lease an electric car at Pearson Ford, but does the earth-friendly car have what it takes to tackle San Diego's roads?
Pearson Ford allowed 10News to test drive one of the new "Think" cars over the weekend. At first glance the car looks a bit like an ice chest, but after getting over its petite feel, 10News was ready to take the car on the road. The first thing any true San Diegan would notice about the car would be its speed, or lack thereof. The car goes from 0 to 30 mph in 7 seconds, but it doesn't go much faster than that. With a top speed of 56 mph, taking the car on the freeway isn't completely out of the question, but don't expect to pass anyone. The car has a very smooth ride, according to 10News reporter Salvador Rivera, and taking surface streets allows one the opportunity to be noticed. The car definitely gets noticed."It's plastic, dude! It's plastic," was the reaction of one onlooker.Others were impressed with the car's look.
"It's unusual looking. It's kind of cute," motorist Bob Lee told 10News.Mike Alpern decided he liked the car and is leasing one."It's a city car," Alpern said. "I can put four of them in my driveway; one for my wife, brother, mother… Why not get four? They've got four colors?"The car never needs a drop of gas. Just an extension cord, and a bit of patience -- the car takes several hours to recharge. The cars are not yet available for sale, but Pearson Ford is leasing them for about $200 a month.
