SAN DIEGO -- Thousands of people across the country are headed for a night out Saturday. It's not a night on the town, but a night on the streets.Friday night in Balboa Park, and in cities across the country, thousands of young people toting sleeping bags want to bring attention to, and ultimately change, what's happening to children in Uganda.
Three years ago filmmakers Jason Russell, Laren Poole and Bobby Bailey found what they've termed the "invisible children of Uganda."Every night thousands of them, many with just the clothes on their backs, would leave their villages to cram into shelters by the thousands in order to be safe. Because if they stayed in their villages, they would be abducted to fight in the rebel army. Now, fast forward three years to a crammed office in El Cajon, and the invisible-children phenomenon is launching its most ambitious project yet -- the Global Night Commute."That's what Saturday is about. It's a big step, but it's definitely the beginning," said Poole. The idea behind the Global Night Commute is to involve as many people in San Diego as there are children who migrate every night in Uganda. The event has more than exceeded the coordinators' expectations. It began with a posting on their Web site. The effort has grown to more than 50,000 people committed to the event and growing."People think Americans don't care, but we're constantly proving people wrong," said coordinator Danica Russell. In fact, the event in San Diego grew so large it had to be moved from Horton Plaza to Balboa Park.It will be a night out like the children of Uganda, but it will also be a night to take action.Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and San Diego are just some of the cities taking part in the event. For more information, click here.
