Traffic Camera Case Ruling Expected Soon

Local Claims Cameras Safe, Important

The red-light camera controversy could come to an end this week.

A judge presiding over the legitimacy of nearly 300 citations has said that he will issue a ruling sometime between now and the end of the month.

While many San Diegans believe the red-light camera's are more for profit than for safety, one man is speaking out in support of the city's program.

Joe Ditler says he wants to see the cameras turned back on. Ditler says that ever since the city's 19 red-light cameras were shut off, drivers have had a cavalier attitude about running red lights.

"They're saying 'Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, can't get me!'" Ditler said.

Do you think red light cameras should be permanently removed from San Diego intersections?
Ditler commutes to the Embarcadero area everyday. He says that the intersection of Grape and Harbor streets has always been unpleasant, but: "When the cameras came on it all changed," Ditler said.

"People were obeying the law. They had some respect for the other drivers. I thought it was brilliant."

Critics argue that the idea was nothing more than a money-making scheme, with Lockheed Martin taking a cut of every ticket served. Others argued that the cameras were an unconstitutional arm of Big Brother.

But Ditler still stands by the cameras. He says that they serve as a deterrent to reckless driving, and without them drivers will be too eager to take chances.
