Salk Institute Accused Of Animal Abuse

Group Alleges Animals Being Denied Food, Water

An animal rights group says that the Salk Institute and other institutions are not properly reporting their experiment procedures and are abusing animals by denying them food and water.

The Cincinnati-based group, Stop Animal Exploitation Now, filed a complaint Tuesday with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, alleging that the laboratories deliberately withhold information from government oversight agencies.

"By reading and learning what has been done to the animals, you can only conclude that the reporting has been inaccurate," especially reports of animals' levels of pain and distress, San Diego member of SAEN Jane Cartmill said.

"We believe that the true nature of these experiments is being withheld or somewhat disguised by inaccurate reporting," Cartmill added.

The Salk Institute issued a written statement saying that all provisions of the animal welfare act are scrupulously adhered to.

"We are in full compliance with all of our federal oversight agencies," said Warren Froelich, director of communications at Salk.

SAEN singled out 50 laboratories nationwide, including the University of California at San Diego.
