SAN DIEGO -- Authorities say a suspected illegal immigrant who was about to throw a rock at a U.S. Border Patrol agent was hospitalized Thursday with a wound that he got when the agent shot him.

Officials say that agents were patrolling the border at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when they saw four suspected undocumented immigrants on a river bank.

An agent followed the men into the river when they ignored commands to stop.

Authorities say one of the men picked up a rock and attempted to throw it at an agent, who then shot him in the arm.

He was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening wound.
