10News Looks At William Pierce
William Pierce is a retired college professor who looks harmless enough, but many say he is the most dangerous racist in the country.
Pierce (left) wrote The Turner Diaries, a book the Anti-Defamation League calls "an explicit terrorism manual," in 1978.
The novel is the fictitious account of a violent global Aryan uprising. The novel has been cited as inspiration for the dragging death of James Byrd. It was rumored to have been a favorite of Columbine killer Eric Harris. And it was almost perfectly imitated by Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, according to the FBI.
In the book, the hero blows up a federal building using a bomb made of ammonia nitrate.
McVeigh was such an avid fan of The Turner Diaries that he was known to pawn the book at gun shows. When police first arrested him, he was carrying excerpts of the book.
"He is a good soldier," Pierce says of McVeigh. "A moral person of strong and upright character."
"I feel sorry to see his life ending because we need more men of principle -- men of character -- in the conflict that is coming to this country," Pierce said.
The conflict that Pierce speaks of is a race war. He believes a racial holy war will "cleanse" the United States of non-whites. Indeed, in Turner Diaries it was the bombing of a federal building that sparked that war.
Pierce claims that he doesn't advocate violence but, "I'd be for anything that is necessary to save our people -- to ensure their survival and their progress."
But a massive race-driven societal upheaval will not come with one underground book.
Pierce is recruiting. He runs a Web site, delivers weekly short-wave radio broadcasts, runs the nation's largest race-driven music label, produces videos for public access television and publishes everything from books and magazines to coloring books.
Pierce's organization, the National Alliance, is convinced that the country is being subversively run by Jews. Indeed, Pierce would point out that TheSanDiegoChannel.com is the Web site of KGTV, an ABC affiliate. ABC, in turn, is owned by Disney, which is headed up by Michael Eisner, who is Jewish.
The National Alliance claims that such "Jew control" results in a "world designed by the media masters to suit their own ends."
But Jews are not the only target of National Alliance venom. Indeed, all "non-whites" are suspect.
"The complexion of our population is rapidly becoming darker," Pierce said.
While police estimate that only 1 in every 1,000 kids will buy into Pierce's rhetoric, he says that's a start.
