The Memorial Walls project, which was announced on Memorial Day 2000 at a VFW ceremony at the historic Mt. Soledad site, will feature six concentric walls bearing up to 3,200 black granite plaques, etched with photographs, service information and personal remembrances of individual veterans.
The granite plaques come in three sizes ranging in price from $600 to $1,000.
A photograph of the veteran may be included, along with rank or rate, branch of service, place of service, honors, military, family or religious symbol and a family expression not exceeding 25 words.
Brick pavers are available to honor individuals who support the Memorial but may not be eligible to purchase a granite plaque. Pavers are priced at $100 each and allow up to 20 letters for the individuals name.
In addition to the construction of the Memorial Walls, a physical site redesign and enhancement program has begun.
A 30-foot flagpole was installed and dedicated on Dec. 6 and the following day was raised, then lowered to half staff, by members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Organization at 7:59 a.m., correlating to the time of the Japanese invasion at the Navy installation on Dec. 7, 1941.
The Memorial Walls is a project under the direction of the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association, which purchased the land parcel from the City of San Diego in 1999.
