Red Light Camera Draws Senator's Ire
Camera Brings In $6.7 Million In Seven Months
A state senator from San Diego complained publicly Friday about a red light camera installed at an intersection downtown, 10News' Herb Cawthorne reported.
Hear Sen. Steve Peace's Comments
State Sen. Steve Peace (D-San Diego) said that the camera at the intersection of Harbor and Grape streets was put in place to make money, not to improve public safety.
The camera was placed at the intersection last October. Since it was installed, 25,000 tickets have been issued, bringing in $6.7 million in fines.
More tickets were issued at this intersection than at any other in the county.
Peace (pictured, left) said that in the 3 years prior to the installation of the camera, only 3 accidents were caused by someone running a red light.
Police say that there has been a 6 percent reduction in red light infractions at this intersection since the light was installed. This compares to a 46 percent reduction at other red light camera intersections.
Peace also says that the yellow light at the intersection does not stay on long enough to meet the minimum state standards.
The senator himself ran a red light at this intersection but never received his ticket in the mail. One of his senate colleagues had the same experience at a red light in Sacramento.
Peace believes that they unfairly got out of the tickets because they had state senate registered vehicles.
