Authorities Monday released the name of a 20-year-old man killed in a shooting in the Encanto area.

Curtis Howard of Winnette Street in San Diego was pronounced dead at UCSD Medical Center at 10:57 p.m. Sunday, medical examiner Investigator Jerry Simmons said.

Howard and a 21-year old friend were driving in the 6000 block of Radio Drive around 9:30 p.m. Sunday when multiple gunshots were fired at the vehicle, San Diego police said.

When the vehicle careened off the road and crashed into a canyon, the man riding with Howard was able to leave the vehicle and call for help, SDPD Lt. Kevin Rooney said.

Paramedics took both victims to the hospital, where Howard later died, Rooney said. The condition of Howard's friend was not immediately available.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately determined, Rooney said.

Anyone with information on the shooting was urged to call the San Diego police Homicide Team at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS.
