7-ton boulder removed from Poway garage: Large rock dislodged by rain, rolled into home
Company removes giant rock for free

POWAY, Calif. - A crew Tuesday safely removed 7-ton rock that rolled down a hill and crashed into a Poway home.
The boulder rolled into Janielle Gendelman's garage in the 13000 block of Vian Road last Thursday. The rainstorm apparently dislodged the large rock from a nearby hillside, causing it to roll hundreds of feet down and through the garage wall.
"And I said, 'God, keep the rest of them from falling and injuring anybody or anything valuable,'" said Gendelman.
Employees with Fallbrook-based Southwest Boulder & Stone saw Gendleman's boulder problem on the news and decided to help her for free. The company usually uses boulders in landscaping, rarely removing them from homes.
"You know, in the last 25 years, we've probably done it half-a-dozen times," said Mike McLeod with Southwest Boulder & Stone.
The removal would have set Gendelman back $2,500. Now, all she has to worry about is paying for the damage to her garage and the plumbing ruined when the boulder blasted through the wall. There's a chance the city of Poway could be liable for the damage if the boulder originated from city property.
Gendelman was thankful for the company's generosity.
"Fabulous, absolutely; I love America. I love people like this. It's incredible," she said.
In the meantime, Gendelman gave Southwest Boulder & Stone the boulder, even though it can be sold for roughly $2,000.
"We'll probably put it back in the yard and says 'As seen on TV,'" chuckled McLeod.
Gendelman said this is the second time a boulder has come loose from the hillside above the home she grew up in. In the 1970s, a smaller boulder damaged a fence surrounding one of the horse corrals.
Ironically, much of what was damaged by the boulder were boxes of supplies Gendelman stockpiles in case of an earthquake or other natural disaster.
