Students Vote To Keep Porn On Campus TV

Some Say Koala TV About Freedom Of Expression

UPDATED: 10:05 pm PST January 27, 2006

UCSD students voted in a special election Friday to determine whether pornography can be aired on the student television station, SRTV.

The show, Koala TV, showed graphic sex and nudity -- which was banned by the UCSD student council.

"It was offensive because it was explicit porno, it showed every kind of sexual act I could think of," student council member Denis Shmidt said.

But a petition drive forced the matter to go back to a special election.

Former UCSD student and host of Koala TV Steve York said the show was about freedom of expression.

"I feel this is really censorship. UCSD students aren't just going to stand around and be bullied by the administration," York said.

Others just wish York would move on.

"This is simply to create debate, to get the spotlight and that's not what SRTV was for. This one thing is ruining it for everyone else," one student told 10News.

In the special election, 54 percent of students voted to get rid of the porn ban while 46 percent want to keep it.

However, 52 percent voted to ban York and Koala TV from student-run television.

This vote is just advisory.

The students and administration will work together on a solution.
