Lake San Marcos remained closed Wednesday as crews worked to repair a broken pipe that spewed about 60,000 gallons of sewage into the water.

A sewer line stemming from a lift station in the 1400 block of Via Entrada Del Lago ruptured around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday. Crews from the Vallecitos Water District had the spill contained around 1:15 a.m. and expected to complete the repairs later Wednesday, according to county officials.

The contamination prompted authorities to close Lake San Marcos to water contact and install warning signs in the area. County officials said the signs will remain in place until water samples indicate the lake is safe for
use.
