CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- To gain control of speeders and those who dash through red lights, Chula Vista is close to joining other cities in the county by installing red-light cameras.Thousands of cars and trucks use East H Street in Chula Vista on a daily basis. It's a primary artery to the 805 freeway, but it's also becomming unsafe.Last year police wrote 311 citations for speeding -- a third of which were on East H Street.
Even worse, there have been fatal traffic accidents on the street. One took place at Hilltop and East H Street and another one took place at Otay Lakes Road and East H Street. One solution could be red light cameras, which according to the city, is not a matter of if, but when."We're looking for cameras in the near future -- some may be a pilot program. I don't have a date for you, but we're seriously considering using those cameras, and East H is definately one of the routes we'd use them," said city engineer Alex Al-Agha.In the interium, Chula Vista police through a state funded grant, are stepping up enforcement, 10News reported. The grant specifically targets traffic-related issues."DUI, speed, seat belt and red-light runners -- we have two officers who target these issues on a daily basis," said police spokesperson Bernard Gonzales. It may still not be enough until, or unless, motorists are willing to change, 10News reported. If Chula Vista follows through, it would become the ninth city in the county to have red-light cameras installed.
