Mt. Soledad Cross Controversy Continues
Local Atheist, ACLU Challenge Land Sale
The controversy over the Mt. Soledad cross just won't go away.
The 9th District Court of Appeals is hearing arguments Wednesday that the sale of the land under the cross was a sham to get around separation of church and state issues, 10News reported.
Atheist Philip Paulsen first sued years ago, when the city owned the cross.
To settle the suit, the cross and its surrounding half acre, were sold to the highest bidder -- Mt. Soledad Memorial Association, a privately owned company.
Now Paulsen and the ACLU are claiming that the sale was a ruse to retain the cross.
