Gov. Schwarzenegger Has Two Weeks To Set Election

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will have two weeks to set a date for an election to replace Cunningham. But it will take time and money.

Voters will most likely have to go to the polls twice, for a possible special election primary in April and then a run-off during the June 2006 primary.

If the governor does not call for a consolidated election -- the special election must be held 112 to 119 days after his proclamation -- which may mean it will take place in the early spring.

The winner will only serve the remainder of Cunningham's term.

The new term begins in January 2007.
