Coastal Commission Approves USS Midway Museum
Aircraft Carrier Will Dock On North Embarcadero
The California Coastal Commission voted unanimously Wednesday to bring the aircraft carrier USS Midway to San Diego as a floating museum, 10News reported.
The commission approved the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan, which will redevelop Harbor Drive and includes bringing the Midway (rendering pictured, left) to the city.
The navy pier at which the 950-foot ship will dock will also be renovated and turned into a park.
"The community really wants this, it was obvious," Project Manager Chuck Nichols said, describing the support evident at the Coastal Commission meeting.
When the results of the vote were announced, cheers rang out from supporters crowding the meeting room at the Bahia Resort on Mission Bay.
"This was the turning point for us, like the battle of Midway in World War II, this was our Midway battle and ? this ship always had good luck," Midway Museum Coordinator Alan Uke said.
The Midway Museum will have interactive displays designed to pay tribute to those who served in all branches of the U.S. armed forces.
The USS Midway (pictured, right) was in service from 1945 until 1992 and participated in the Gulf War.
The ship will be towed to San Diego by the end of this year and opened as a museum some time in 2002. The ship's flight deck will be open to the public at no charge.
